Our team is comprised of clinical and business leaders from across different domains of Neurology, Critical Care, Neurosurgery, and Stroke Imaging who are passionate about improving care for stroke patients.

The Problem

Brain edema (swelling) is the main cause of death after stroke. Approximately 50% of strokes will develop edema, and 20% will develop edema that is clinically worrisome. A subset of those patients will develop severe (malignant) edema that is deadly. This edema typically develops within 72 hours of stroke.

Currently, our ability to predict which patients will develop severe edema is poor. Even the most trained clinicians often cannot precisely identify patients who are at highest risk for severe edema. And, while there are many acute stroke AI image analysis tools to diagnose strokes, no tools address either edema or risk prediction for stroke patients.

Why This Matters

Patients have better outcomes the earlier their severe edema is treated, and they ideally would be treated before their edema causes irreversible neurological damage. However, we cannot predict who these patients are before they neurologically decline. This clinical blind spot leads to:

  • ~17,000 annual preventable deaths

  • ~20,000 severely disabled survivors

  • Very low rates of life-saving surgeries

  • Wasted hospital resources

  • Increased costs of care

  • Worse outcomes for stroke centers

Our technology enables precise edema risk prediction at 24 hours after stroke — a timepoint that enables proactive treatment decisions before edema patients suffer neurological damage.
